New York City is one of the world’s leading cultural meccas. As such, it has a high proportion of significant museums that cover subject areas that will surely pique the interest of anybody in your family. NYC has not forgotten about the kids, either, as there are a number of museums that will keep engaged and enthralled throughout their time in the Big Apple. With that in mind, let’s go over some museums in New York that keep the fun factor at a high level.

1) Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum – If you want see some of the greatest American military and space program relics from the 20th century, the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum is where you’ll want to go. One of the biggest acquisitions they have made is the aircraft carrier that is the namesake of the place, the USS Intrepid. Actively involved in tours of duty during World War II and in Vietnam, the USS Intrepid Museum has also collected astronauts after they have splashed down from the Gemini and Mercury space missions.

Also, this fun place contains none other than the Enterprise, the first Space Shuttle to be used in the long history of American space experiments and exploration. Along with these marquee attractions, there are numerous additional restored airplanes to marvel and get pictures with, such as the Concorde, the former supersonic Trans-Atlantic commercial flight service. If your kids love planes, ships and military hardware, there will no shortage of things for them to be amazed by at the Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum.

2) Dimenna Children’s History Museum – Located within New York Historical Society’s lower level, the Dimenna Children’s History Museum examines the history of New York City through the eyes of children from its past. Interactive exhibits and games encourage kids to identify with key luminaries and important figures from New York’s past, while those that are more literately inclined can check out the Barbara K. Lipman Children’s History Library.

3) American Museum of Natural History – Do your little ones love dinosaurs? Well, at the American Museum of Natural History, they will be running wild around the place with excitement, as this world-renowned institution contains one of the globe’s most impressive collections of fully assembled dinosaur fossils. From an intimidating Tyrannosaurus Rex, to the ever popular Stegosaurus, this is an experience they will talk about for a long time afterwards. If you can manage to pull them away from the dino exhibits, this museum also has a number of other impressive exhibits, from whales to space to insects, as well as an IMAX screen!
